Over the past three years we have raised about $63,000.00 to build a solar powered system to deliver clean, safe drinking water to Stanley’s village in Kenya. You will remember that we started helping the village by providing school books for the village children after learning that only the teachers had books. By providing this essential learning tool, we helped the children who increased their performance from the 3rd to the 97th per centile of students taking the national tests measuring performance and knowledge. We also helped by providing materials for the floors in the school, from dirt to tile. Read more about the history of this project.
Before the water system was installed the women of the village needed to walk 1 1⁄2 miles up the hill to a spring and carry about 5 gallons of water back to the village each day in order to have safe and clean water for drinking, cooking and dish and hand washing. The villagers, mostly women dug 3 1⁄2 miles of trenches for the water pipes to take the spring water from the spring to a point high above the village where they installed a storage tank from which water could flow to the village. We provided the money for a solar electric power generating system, a pump, the necessary water pipes, and one 20,000 liter and four 5,000 liter plastic tanks for the system. We also provided funds to refurbish the spring and create a cement tank into which the spring water could flow and into which the pump was installed.
What we need to do now is provide funds to purchase a 60,000 liter steel tank to be placed where the 20,000 liter tank is now located high above the village. We did not have funds for this large a tank and settled for the smaller tank to get the system going. The solar system will pump water for about 8 to 9 hours a day and the demand for water is primarily in the early morning and late afternoon so the additional storage is necessary to provide a water source 24 hours per day. The plan is to relocate the 20,000 liter tank in the central part of the village. We have created a system where no person has to walk more than 100 yards to get a supply of clean safe drinking water. The system needs $20,000.00 to make this improvement. We are asking for your donations at this time.
