The Executive Council met on April 15, 2021. We reviewed the recommendation of the COVID -19 Task force that it would be safe for us to conduct worship services by May 30, 2021. The task force includes Laurel Anderson, Eric Butler, Fred Cummins, Dee Cunningham, Andrew Davis, Charlie Golden, Jean Jeffress, John Miller, Sandy Ruggles, Katy Waugh, and Bob Willwerth. The Council also reviewed the results of the member survey on the reopening issue. The survey revealed that over 94% of those responding expected to be vaccinated by May 30, that over 65% of those responding reported they were excited about the idea of reopening, and that over 92% of those responding intended to attend in person services sometime in 2021. Forty-three people indicated they would likely attend the first service. Under current Santa Clara County regulations, we can seat 38 people in the sanctuary and additional people can be seated in the Parish Hall. The rule limiting us is the one requiring family groups to be separated by 6 feet. As more data becomes available, that restriction may be modified.
Our plan is to conduct a hybrid type of service where those who do not attend in person can attend, as we are now doing, by zoom. We have found many advantages in the zoom format which provides an opportunity to attend for those who live at a distance and those who are more comfortable being in their residences. This kind of service will be a challenge technically, and we should expect some difficulties and improvement as we learn.
While the target date is May 30, that date is subject to change if the County of Santa Clara changes its rules or if the needed equipment does not arrive in time. We live in challenging times, so we need to be prepared for the unexpected!
